Reigning in the cost of Christmas

How do we have a fabulous Christmas without causing irreparable damage to our pocket books and budgets? This is the question Tim and I pondered as we threw $100.00 into fancy new outdoor lights and a timer. While living in California we enjoyed cutting a fresh tree from the tree farm and enjoyed it's pine aroma through out the season. Budget restraints have us contemplating putting up our modest artificial tree which we have done most of our 11 years in Omaha. Our passion tells us to throw the kids in the car and head to the farm to plop another 50 or 60 on a real tree to resurrect our family tradition. Then we remember we have a daughter at UW with two semesters to go that was just let go from a lucrative job in the now beleaguered financial sector. Her new husband totally unaware that she needs 400.00 a week just to pay bills wants her to stay home and study....boy is he in for a shock to his financial situation. There have been lavish Christmases at our house with stacks to the ceiling that left us wondering why didn't we just get the boxes which the kids liked playing with more than their contents. Well what's it going to be this year as the kids are getting older and have expectations of grandeur inspired from memories of past Christmases. We'll keep you posted.

Goodwill, here we come.
